There are some signs of a bad shift cable that you need to spot in your vehicle. 1. Indicator and gear mismatch

If the shift cable is not in good condition or something wrong, then you will experience the mismatch between the indicator and the gear you are in. You will see this frequently that the indicator is showing the wrong gear and it is due to either the shift cable getting stretched or any other problem. 

2. The vehicle will not turn off

The other problem you could face due to the stretching of the cable is that your vehicle will not turn off even after switching off the ignition. This problem occurs as most of the vehicle does not turn off unless the gear is in parking or neutral. 3. Vehicle starts in another gear

If you experiencing that vehicle is starting into another gear than neural or parking, then it is a shift cable problem. This could be due to the broken or stretched shift cable, and it is quite dangerous. You need to get the car repaired as you can't use the car safely until the problem is resolved.
