4 Symptoms Indicating A Faulty Shift Cable

A shift cable helps the driver in choosing the gear setting of a vehicle. It is the link between the gear handle and the transmission in a vehicle. If you are having a problem with gear shifting while driving, then it may be because of faulty shift cable, and your car needs shift cable replacement.

Here are the symptoms of a failing shift cable:

1. Unable to remove the key from ignition: You will not be able to turn your vehicle off or remove the key from ignition, in case the shift cable of your car stretches. This situation can cause accidents as you may not know the gear you are in when you are trying to turn off the vehicle. Therefore, when you are facing difficulty in turning your vehicle off, you should replace the shift cable of your car to avoid accidents.

2. The vehicle does not start in neutral or park gear: You need to consult a mechanic if it does not start in park or neutral gear. The car repairing service will diagnose the gear system of your car and tell you if the problem lies with the shift interlock solenoid or with the shift selector cable. Then you need to replace the faulty parts according to their advice so that your vehicle can start in neutral gear.

3. The indicator does not match the gear: If the indicator light does not match the gear you are in, it means that the shift cable is not working properly. This happens because the shift cable doesn’t move to the correct spot as it has become stretched. In that case, you should replace the shift selector cable with a mechanic, so that your indicator notes the correct reading.

4. The vehicle will not go into gear: There is a problem with shift selector cable if the gear selector is not moving when you are trying to shift the gear. This happens when the shift cable does not have the grasp to change the gear. Therefore, you should replace your shift cable so as to make your car function properly.

You must replace your shift cable when you see any of these symptoms. Moreover, shift cable replacement cost is affordable.
