Explanation of the Working of Transmission Shift Cable Linkages

Almost all the automatic transmission setup basically comprises the same set of shift linkages, which is placed on the transmission itself. The linkage automatic transmission shift cable which is present in between the transmission and cabin would vary according to make and model, however, the function would remain the same. There is a floor shift, as well as, a column shift that is both operated by using transmission cables. Shift levers are also fitted on the setup of several SUVs; none of them however are complicated as they may seem at first glance. In this blog post, we will talk about the working of the transmission linkage to help you understand it better and find the best kit for your vehicle.

Detents

The transmission which is used to alter the gears will be common as you may already have realized. With the rotation of the lever, there will be detents for Neutral, Park, Reverse, and all gears.

Lockout

The dash indicator which indicates or shows the position of the gear is a tiny needle attached to a cord. It can be attached by using a spring clip on the column barrel that turns around by using the handle. When the handle is pulled in the downward direction, the barrel starts to rotate clockwise. Along with that, it also pulls up on the indicator, coming back to a lower gear.

Column shift

For a column shift, there will be a rod that runs down from the handle straight, closely attached to a lever of the brake pedal arm. The shift cable from Ford or any other manufacturer would run to the firewall and get attached to the lever. The cable operates from the firewall till the transmission gear shift linkage.

Floors shift

A floor shift linkage works by pulling/pushing the cable with the help of the lever handle’s forward and backward movement. Should you ever need to replace the cable, make sure to check that the transmission is in the park mode. Fit the cable so that it loosely fits onto the transmission lever.

Additionally, do not forget to use high-quality bushing kits to repair the cables.
