All You Ever Wanted to Know About Shifter Cables

A majority of present and previous generation vehicle models make use of cables to link the shifter handle on to the transmission. Vehicles that are equipped with automatic transmission usually have a single type of transmission cable. On the other hand, vehicles that are equipped with manual transmissions are comprised of two or more shifter cables. The principle working of shifter cable is the same irrespective of the transmission being manual or automatic. Whereas, the symptoms of a bad shift cable envoy bushing is completely different for different transmissions.

Automatic transmissions come with a single shift lever which is linked to the manual valve in the valve transmission body or component. This specific lever is pushed/pulled on a single surface into a number of different positions as the shifter handle is moved inside the machine. The manual transmissions comes with two shift levers, one of them is used for the vertical movement and the other for horizontal movement of the transmission.

The horizontal lever is pulled/pushed by a single cable, moving along the single plane with up to three positions. The vertical lever on the other hand moves the shifter assembly typically on the transmission (creating an up and down movement). When the shifter is moved towards the vehicle front or rear, the shifter cable moves the horizontal lever. When the shifter is moved left or right, it pushes and pulls many of the other cables. In addition to that, it also moves the shifter assembly up and down. Should you be using a six-speed manual transmission, the vehicle may come with a third shift cable that can be used to move the lock-out lever. This specifically designed cable can only be used when a special button is pressed or pushed down on the shift lever to make the reverse into force.

One of the most common reasons why shift cables fail is because of extended period of stretching. It is more common in manual transmissions than the automatic ones. Automatic transmission work in a way when you can use the machine in an autopilot mode without worrying too much about shifting the cables. Make sure to use a high-quality bushing kit when you are doing the repair and maintenance.
